We did it, we ran our first 5k!
Yesterday morning Mya and I participated in the second annual Jog for the Dogs 5k fun run and walk benefiting AJ’s Search and Rescue and we had a blast! We have been training for 8-ish weeks and this race was our longest run to date.
The race started at 10 am so we arrived around 9:20 am to pick up our packet, attach my bib, stretch, and to get a last-minute potty break for Mya. It was so fun to see all the runners and walkers there with their dogs. 111 humans and 60 dogs were registered for this 5k, which was amazing!
At the starting line, Mya was giddy with excitement, she knew something good was going on. To start the race they counted down 3, 2, 1 GO! And played Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men (They got a good laugh out of me on that one). I wish I would have recorded the beginning of the race because Mya basically pulled me the first mile with excitement of everyone running! If she could talk, she would’ve said, LET’S GO MOM, FASTER MOM! Sorry Mya, momma isn’t that fast.
We finally found our rhythm after the first mile and we kept a steady pace and even ran with another racer and her dog. At the 1.5-mile mark, the volunteers had a water station for us and for the dogs, which we were super thankful for! Around mile 2, Mya was pretty tired and was slowing down, so we did take breaks of running and walking throughout the course.
We finished strong by running the last half mile and completed all 3.1 miles! At the finish line, I received a finisher’s medal and Mya received a hand-sewn squeaky toy. It didn’t matter that we weren’t the fastest runners, I was so happy that we completed our goal of running a 5k together and we definitely had fun doing it!
If you’ve been thinking about running a 5k with your dog, I highly recommend doing so! It’s a great way for you to bond while also getting exercise in the great outdoors.
Thank you to AJ’s Search and Rescue for putting on a fantastic event and we cannot wait to do it again next year!
